In late 1944, Onoda was sent to Lubang Island in Mindoro, where he received orders to spy on enemy around the area and conduct sabotage activities against incoming American forces.

When the US Army arrived on the Island in 1945, he was ordered by his superior, Major Taniguchi Yoshimi, to stay on the island and hold off the Americans for as long as possible. Onoda and three other enlisted personnel began to retreat to the mountains despite having leaflets dropped announcing that the war is over.
